How do you determine if my event is accepted?

We review all event requests as a team and determine collectively if events are a good fit for our space. We take into consideration factors such as alignment with our mission/values, personal experience, other event requests, and staffing availability.

While submitting events early does not guarantee acceptance, events that have been booked ahead of time may take priority.

Do I need to know someone at the Burrow to host an event there?

While you do not need to know anyone involved with the Burrow to host an event here, we strongly recommend dropping by our space or reaching out to get connected with someone. We operate by building trust and familiarity with each other.

How do events align with your mission and values?

You can find our mission and values written out at https://durhamburrow.xyz/about/

Additionally, here are some examples of how events can stay aligned with our values:

  • Mission: We book events that are autonomous, anti-hierarchical, and self-organizing towards our collective liberation.
  • Autonomy: We do not host events that are disempowering to individuals and run contrary to our commitment to autonomy and horizontalism. This includes any political party-affiliated organizations, events or recruiting. Whether Democrats, Republicans, DSA or PSL, it is our belief that such representative structures take power away from grassroots initiatives and redirect power back toward authority. This is detrimental and counter-productive to our goal of uplifting each other through direct participation and engagement.
  • Mutual Aid: Collectives and individuals who have the means to pay our suggested rate are expected to pay. Benefits where money is being raised should be explicit about where the funds are going. We prioritize events that are raising money for collectives over those raising money for individuals. Ideally, mutual aid is a reciprocal process of empowering entire communities. We think of it as a question of meeting individual needs vs building collective infrastructure for resistance and liberation. For instance, an example of the former might be raising funds to pay an individuals rent, while an example of effective mutual aid might be raising money for a strike or bail fund. Mutual aid carries a reasonable expectation that support received will be reciprocated to benefit the broader community and help support a larger project of liberation.
  • Accessibility: We do not host events that are for-profit or have a required fee for entry. Public events that are ticketed should have a no-questions-asked N.O.T.A.F.L.O.F. (No One Turned Away For Lack Of Funds)
  • Abolition: In accordance with our belief in a world free of cops and prisons, we believe that abolition requires developing the skills to resolve conflicts and navigate accountability without these oppressive structures. This means that we do not call the cops or allow the cops in the space.
  • Accountability: We expect individuals booking our space to communicate through Signal or email in a timely manner and follow through with the event that was agreed upon. We understand if cancellations need to occur, but ask for as much advance notice as possible. In the case of multiple last minute cancellations, no-shows, or drops in communication, we may reject future booking requests. We expect all individuals using our space to be responsible to each other and our community, stay in alignment with our values, and be open to dialogue and feedback.

How long till I hear back about my event?

How far out can I book my event?

Can I book a recurring event?

ORGANIZATION

Who runs the Burrow?

The Burrow is an all volunteer run collective.

What is your connection with Revenant Combat Club?

We collaborate frequently with the gym upstairs on political and radical events. Many of our collective members train at Revenant, and many martial arts students attend events at The Burrow.

How can I get involved with the Burrow?

As an autonomous meeting and event space, the Burrow is designed to help facilitate community organizing and empowerment. Accordingly, anyone who shares a commitment to our mission and values can get involved with the Burrow! Some ways to participate include organizing a benefit for the space, submitting a request to host a community event, drop by for open hours or check our calendar to attend an upcoming public event.

If you would like to become involved as an organizer, talk to a current collective member to learn more about possible openings, the process for joining the collective, the mission and values of the burrow, as well as responsibilities and expectations for collective members, to see if it might be a good fit for you and for us.

I have feedback/comments/questions/concerns about the Burrow, where can I share them?

You can talk to a collective member in person, send us an email (info@durhamburrow.xyz) or drop a comment in our suggestions box at the space.
